There’s a good chance that you’ve already heard about this from some of the other sites that you frequent, but on the off chance that you haven’t, I thought I’d point it out just in case. On Labour Day, Khoi Vinh and Liz Danzico launched a great new design opinion site called A Brief Message. Rather than trying to explain what the site is all about myself, I’ll just echo what came straight from the horse’s mouth:
A Brief Message features design opinions expressed in short form. Somewhere between critiques and manifestos, between wordy and skimpy, Brief Messages are viewpoints on design in the real world. They’re pithy, provocative and short — 200 words or less.
First off, this is just a great idea. How many times have you gone through all the unread items in your RSS reader and looked at the length of a post only to either ignore it completely by marking it as read, or skim through it at a speedy pace without actually absorbing any of its content? I know I have.
People are busy, and A Brief Message seems to understand that (captured by the title of Liz’s introductory post: Because Long Takes Too Long. Yes, there is definitely a place for long-form articles, but A Brief Message offers thought provoking commentary on design in very short digestible pieces. Best of all, they also force their commenters to write their own thoughts in 200 words or less, which really helps the discussion stay concise, well thought out and very much on topic.
The first posts on the site have been excellent and I’m really looking forward to what’s next. So, if you’re looking for some inspiring thoughts on design but you don’t want to spend a lot of time reading, be sure to check out A Brief Message.
