A List Apart 211

If you haven’t had a chance to read today’s issue, or you’ve never heard of A List Apart before… you’re missing out.

Today’s issue of A List Apart (an awesome webazine for developers) contains 2 very good articles that every web developer should put on their must-read list and immediately add to their favourites. Just a suggestion though.

In Search of the Holy Grail covers what is considered to be the ‘Holy Grail’ of CSS layouts. A 3-column layout with header and footer where all 3 columns are fluid and the source is in the ‘perfect’ order for screen readers or other devices concerned with accessibility. If you’re looking for a good tutorial on how to accomplish this layout, you’ll be overjoyed, because this is a great one.

Reinspired

If you’re a regular visitor to this site, you’ve probably noticed the design change that has taken place around here. I mentioned a few days ago that a new design was coming, so here it is! I’ve made changes to several areas of the site and most are pretty subtle. The biggest change (obviously) is the new colour scheme and logo design.

The new colour scheme kind of speaks for itself, so I wont say much about it. The logo is something that I don’t know if I was ever happy with before, so I started over… sort of. The copy hasn’t changed except for a lighter gray for the ‘re’ of reinspire. For the icon part of the logo I wanted to create something simple, but strong, and this is what I came up with:

Random Thoughts

Over the past few weeks I’ve had a lot of things running through my brain that I felt like I wanted to share. None of them really constitute a full entry in my mind, so I’ll just post them all at once.

This is something that I know many people do on their sites from time to time and I would imagine that more and more of these entries will show up here in the coming months as well. Wait and see…

Redesign Coming Soon

Well, I said way back when that I had wanted to give this site a facelift, but I didn’t really know when it would happen. I’m happy to say that the redesign is in progress, almost complete and will probably be uploaded this weekend. New site design, new logo, and new posts that actually relate to web development will all be coming in the near future! Check back often.

Superbowl Predictions

NFL logoWell, it all comes down to one. One game that will determine who is remembered and who is forgotten. One game that will cap a successful season for one team and one game that will make all the work seem like a failure for the other. Who those teams will be is a question that’s going to be answered on Sunday, February 5th. For me, I’m looking forward to what should prove to be a great game.

No one cares what each team did all season. Forget about it. It’s all in the past and the only thing that matters is now. What is each team going to do once the ball has been kicked off? Every player will tell you that this is what they’ve prepared for their entire careers. The moment is now, how will each team respond?

NFL Conference Championship Predictions

NFL logoFirst of all, last week was probably one of the most exciting weekends of football that I’ve seen in a long time. All 4 games were hard fought battles.

Indianapolis. I can’t believe it ended this way. I suppose that makes a bit of a case for teams in the future that clinch everything early… don’t rest your starters. I feel bad for Mike Vanderjagt, who missed the tying field goal opportunity, but let’s get one thing straight; that’s not the only mistake that killed the Colts on Sunday, it was just the final nail.

NFL Divisional Predictions

NFL logoWell, last week was a great week of football. I started my playoff predictions by going 2-2, but I hope to do much better this week.

The big games really start to come together this week with Washington at Seattle, New England at Denver, Pittsburgh at Indianapolis and Carolina at Chicago. There should be a lot of great action this weekend.

Microsoft is on the Standards Train

VistaIt started earlier this year with Microsoft’s (mostly) standards-based redesign of MSN.com. Now, it’s nice to see that Microsoft is continuing in that vein by designing their new Windows Vista homepage using a standards-based design.

What’s even nicer is that the homepage is actually quite attractive (unlike MSN.com). It doesn’t have a whole lot of content in there yet, but it’s a good start so far. The markup isn’t terribly incredible (no lists for links, etc.) and it doesn’t validate, but that’s not really the point here. As we all know, validation is not the number one priority. Accessibility is.

NFL Wild Card Predictions

NFL logoThe Playoffs are here! It’s been a long season so far, especially for Packers fans, so it’ll be nice to watch some great playoff action this weekend. What’s nice for me is that the Colts (my 2nd favourite team) are the front runners to win the Superbowl.

This week’s wild card match-ups present some very interesting games. Honestly, it’ll be tough to predict every one of them because there aren’t really ‘underdogs’ in any of the matches.
